Start Your Fall Planning

Spring is in the air!  Time for outdoor festivals, backyard BBQ's, and being outside. Time to come out of hibernation and reconnect with your community. During the month of April, Flow Circus will be in our community teaching workshops, performing at community festivals, and donating 4 Twist & Earn! fund raising programs to support our library community that extends throughout the East Coast (read the first item of this newsletter for more information).

Back in the office, we are busy finalizing details and promotional materials for this summer's Make a Splash summer reading performance. As of right now, we have close to 90 library shows and several tween/teen workshops booked for Summer 2010. Believe it or not, we still have openings so if you haven't booked your SRP yet, call us!

As always, we appreciate your support and look forward to helping communities thrive!

Playfully Yours,
Paul & Dawn

Make Waves/Make Money - Library Giveaway: Exciting news for YA/Teen Librarians looking for funding AND innovative programming. Flow Circus will be donating Twist & Earn! fund raising tote bags to 4 libraries in the regions where we currently do performances and workshops. The Twist & Earn! program provides your teens with instructional materials and the supplies needed to learn how to twist balloons and fund raise for your library. Have your teen advisory group identify a goal, learn a new skill, and then go out into the community to earn money toward that goal. Teens can Make Waves this summer by making a contribution to their library!

If you work with tweens/teens at a library in one of the following regions you are eligible to win:

Northeast Region: ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD

Southeast Region: VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL
Go to www.twistandearn.com to learn more and enter the contest between April1-30. We will randomly select 2 libraries from each region to win a Twist & Earn! tote. The winners will be announced and the programs will be shipped in early May so that the teens can be trained in time for summer. Please share this information with your colleagues.

Twist & Earn! at Wake Forest-Rolesville Middle School: Our local middle school has an active afterschool organization called S.O.S. (Social Organization & Service Club). The club introduces students to the needs of others in their community and the ethical management of business. Their big event every spring is a dance marathon which raises money for Duke and UNC's Children's Hospitals. Their goal for the dance marathon and other fund raising efforts this year is $20,000.

Recently, their faculty adviser Mike Meyer reached out to the local business community to help students develop entrepreneurial skills such as writing business plans, budgeting, marketing, project management, etc.  Flow Circus responded by donating a balloon twisting workshop and Twist & Earn! tote. Students work in teams developing plans for where to twist, contacting local businesses/events to get permission to twist, advertising, and tracking their sales. Twisting at local events leading up to the dance marathon will also help them raise awareness about their organization/event.

We conducted the workshop a few weeks ago and it was a huge success. We had over 20 kids attending and several were already volunteering to twist at a local flea market the next weekend. We can't wait to see the kids out in the community adding a little color to events and raising money toward their goal. Visit the www.twistandearn.com for more information about the program.

Durham Arts Council Collaborations: During the month of April, Flow Circus will continue two collaborations coordinated through the Durham Arts Council. First, we are thrilled to be returning to Chapel Hill's Newcomer Center to conduct a Skill Toy Residency with the middle schoolers. The students at the Newcomer Center are ESL students new to the United States. Juggling and skill toys provide a wonderful opportunity for students to feel playful and confident in a new environment. The smiles on their faces need no translation!

The second collaboration will be with the Encore afterschool program in the Durham Public Schools. Encore has sites at 6 middle schools in Durham. Since January, we have visited 4 of the sites to teach juggling. This month we will visit a 5th site and return to Neal Middle School for a second visit to introduce new skill toys.

We look forward to working with the Durham Arts Council to continue to enrich classroom and afterschool experiences for tweens & teens. For more information about skill toys visit our website. If you have ideas for a possible collaboration with Flow Circus, feel free to contact Paul at paul@flowcircus.com or (919) 426-9157.

Herbfest 2010: Flow Circus will be performing this month in Wake Forest, NC (our hometown). Wake Forest is home to Herbfest, a 10 day long festival featuring organically grown herb and vegetable plants, herb crafts, cosmetic soaps, etc. The ten days are filled with educational seminars and entertainment. Visit the Herbfest website for more information about the events.

Paul's performance is on Saturday, April 17th at 11am. If you live in the Triangle area, you should plan to make the trip to Wake Forest for some outdoor fun! Herbfest is held at Festival Park in historic downtown Wake Forest (525 South White Street). Hope to see you there!

Start Your Fall Planning: The weather is just starting to warm up so you probably don't want to think about the fall season yet! We do know, however, that many of you like to plan early. Contact us if you are interested in one of the following:

  • Read Yourself Silly performance for a Back to School Family Night, Literacy Night, or Book Fair

  • A unique and playful Staff Development to kick off the school year

  • Skill Toys from Around the World workshops for World History classes

  • Hands-on team building workshops for your teen advisory group
