Flow Circus July Update

July 2009

Greetings from Paul

Flow Circus Featured in Creativity Counts at ALA Conference

New Teen Workshops for Libraries

21 New Variety Artists Cultivated!

Fall School & Library Tour Schedule Set

Halfway through the summer and Dawn and I are having more fun than ever. One of the highlights has been working with groups of tweens and teen developing circus skills through workshops, camps, and Skill Toy Programs. Last week we ran 2 camps at Cary Academy here in North Carolina. We enjoy having the opportunity to watch the campers transform throughout the week - a shy child becomes more comfortable in front of peers and an awkward, clumsy child becomes more sure-footed and confident. We love when a parent comments that his or her child comes home each day excited to share the new skills learned in camp.

We are not surprised when we see teens and tweens skipping to our programs.  We do it too.

Playfully yours,

Paul

Flow Circus Featured in Creativity Counts at ALA Conference: The American Library Association is currently holding its Annual Conference in Chicago (July 9-15). The Flow Circus Twist & Earn! program will be one of the innovative teen programs highlighted at the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) President's Program Creativity Counts: Nurturing Teen's Talents at Libraries Large & Small. We are honored to be included in this program. For more information about YALSA at the ALA conference and to view the powerpoint show of teen programs with a creative flair visit their wiki page. The powerpoint will be posted after the session is held on Monday afternoon (7/13).

Special thanks to Sunnie Sette, YA Librarian in New Haven (CT), for submitting our program to the President's Program Committee for consideration. We conducted a Twisted Fun! workshop there during National Library Week last April and she will be twisting even more balloons with her teens this fall. Visit our Twist & Earn! page to learn more about this fun program.

New Teen Workshops for Libraries: Last month we offered a combination performance and workshop for 20 teens in Elkin, NC. Based on the enthusiastic response, we have redesigned our library workshops to better fit the needs of tween & teen programs. Flow Circus will now be offering 90 minute workshops that will begin with a 15 minute mini-performance followed by hands-on time with individual feedback provided by two instructors. The following are the workshops we are currently offering.

Juggle Me This: Three ball juggling is broken down into simple, easy to learn steps. Workshop includes a set of juggling balls & book for the library to add to its collection.

Skill Toys from Around the World: Flower sticks, Japanese kendama, diabolo, and spinning plates are introduced. Workshop includes a set of flower sticks and instructional DVD for the library.

Twisted Fun! Balloon twisting skills are developed to foster creative thinking and team work. Workshop includes a balloon twisting kit for the library or can be combined with the Twist & Earn! program.

21 New Tween & Teen Variety Artists Cultivated! Flow Circus was excited to return to the Cary Academy Summer Quest program last week to teach 21 campers ages 9-14 juggling, magic, and balloon sculpting. We were impressed by the skills developed throughout the week, but more importantly by the enthusiasm that the campers exhibited for the Variety Arts. To see images of our campers sculpting giant palm trees, mastering a variety of skill toys, and performing magic tricks, visit our photo gallery.

We will be offering another beginner camp and an advanced camp in a few weeks and only have 1 spot left! For more information, visit the Cary Academy Summer Quest website.
