As a kid I loved Dr. Seuss.  As a grown up, I love Dr. Seuss even more.  What a cool guy! He was smart, playful, and socially aware!  It was an honor to perform at the grand opening of his National Memorial Sculpture Garden in Springfield MA in 2001.  One of the best compliments I ever got came after one of my performances there.  A boy of about 5 came up to me after the show and said "you're like the Cat in the Hat."

Throughout the years I have had many favorite Seuss books and my current favorite is If I Ran the Circus.  I can only hope that our work at Flow Circus would have made Dr. Seuss proud.

Best, Paul

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss:  Monday, March 2nd, marks the 105th birthday of Theodore Geisel who influenced us all as children's book author, Dr. Seuss! Whether it is Cat in the Hat or Green Eggs and Ham, we all have our favorite Dr. Seuss book and this is the day to dust it off and read it again. Find a child to share your love of these books.

Libraries and schools across the country are celebrating Read Across America to remind us how important it is to motivate children to read. For more information and activity ideas visit the National Education Association's website.

If you are a middle or high school teacher, this is also a great opportunity to introduce the political cartoons of Theodore Geisel. Many artists work in more than one genre, and Geisel's cartoons illustrate that. In addition to practicing visual literacy skills to "read" the political cartoon, students can look for similarities and differences between Dr. Seuss's children's book characters and the political cartoon figures.

However you celebrate it,     Today is your day.
                                            You're off to Great Places!
                                            You're off and away!

Community Partnerships & Grants:  The current economy is forcing everyone to get creative and we are excited to be partnering with community organizations to develop grant proposals to bring innovative hands-on programming to tweens and teens. The Boys & Girls Club of Wake County recently submitted a grant to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina to introduce Play Better to club members. This Flow Circus program utilizes skill based activities such as juggling, flower sticks, and diabolo to engage students that typically avoid sports in active, self-directed play.

We have met with several other afterschool programs and library systems interested in developing similar partnerships in 2009-10 school year. If you are interested in learning more about these programs, visit the Skill Toy Page or contact Paul: paul@flowcircus.com or (919) 426-9157.

Read Yourself Silly at End of School Year Celebrations: Flow Circus is available to add playfulness to your school's end of year celebrations. In Read Yourself Silly, Paul tells the story of how a trip to the circus inspired him to visit his library to learn more about juggling which led to balloons, magic, and the history of the circus. Throughout the performance he models how learning through books can be fun and often times you find things you didn't even know you were interested in!

Flow Circus also offers hands-on workshops that are a wonderful addition to field day events. Students in grades 4+ can learn steps to juggling that will keep them busy all summer long!
