Memories of Play: An Oral History Project

Webkinz, Wii, and playdates...technology is forever altering the experience of play. Going, going, and gone are the days of neighborhood pick-up kickball games, imaginative adventures in the woods, and afternoons of mastering the yo-yo, hula hoop, tops, and other skill toys.

In an effort to preserve the spirit of unstructured childhood play, we are gathering stories about favorite toys and games prior to 1980.

Tell us your story or ask a parent or grandparent for a story about their favorite game or toy. Be sure to include the approximate year of your recollections and enjoy your memories of play!

  1. Growing up, I spent hours and hours creating intricate systems of roads in the dirt for my hot wheels and matchbox cars. These roads would traverse up the side of a small mound that was the foundation of an old stone wall.

  2. Growing up in the 1970s with 2 older brothers, it is not surprising that I had a baseball card collection. The best part about the collection was spending afternoons "flipping cards" against the bottom step of the staircase in our house. Each of us would flip a card & depending on how it landed, one of us would end up with all three from that round. The pressure would be on when one of my brothers was flipping a player from the Oakland A's (not sure why, but they were "my team") because I would want to win it. This little sister also enjoyed stealing a Yankee away from her older brother when she had the chance because those were his favorite!!

Believe it or not, I still have a shoebox full of baseball cards in my attic - some more worn than others!!
