You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.

This quote was said by Plato in ancient times, but it still holds relevance in our world today. Whether conducting teen workshops or adult staff development, we see it all of the time. As the holiday season kicks into gear, make sure you find time to play ...... in a quiet moment by yourself, at home with your family, and at work with colleagues. You will be amazed at what you discover!

Playfully Yours, Paul & Dawn

America's Librarians Got Talent: Not sure if this idea will get picked up by the networks, but we know librarians are a talented group! Last week, a staff development session that we conducted culminated in the creation of commercials to illustrate the importance of libraries in the 21st century. They have creativity, humor, and of course.....balloons.

Visit the Flow Circus Blog to view these commercials and see how much fun we had!

Lights on Afterschool: As you probably remember from last month's newsletter, we sent President Obama a personalized kendama with a letter advocating for afterschool programs and offering to teach juggling on the White House lawn to celebrate Lights on Afterschool. We have not heard back from him yet, but we didn't let that stop us.

Flow Circus was on tour in the Washington, DC area during Lights on Afterschool and offered to help the Greater Washington Boys & Girls Club celebrate the event with a performance of Read Yourself Silly. Program director Ron Diokno commented after the show that the kids were simply too engaged and mesmerized. I guarantee you they had a great time, in fact, too much fun for one of our kids that couldn’t stop laughing throughout the show! If more activities were like this, then more of our kids would learn and be inspired to achieve in their own ways.

We were happy to inspire the club members and staff with our playfulness and look forward to participating in theLights on Afterschool celebration again next year. For photos from the event and links to the new report America After 3pm visit the Flow Circus Blog.

National Gaming Day: Saturday, November 14th has been designated as National Gaming Day by the American Library Association. Of course, we think that play should be a year round event! Juggling and skill toys are not usually recognized as gaming, but they are a form of play that can help bring teens into the library while promoting information literacy. When a teen has learned how to juggle and then wants to find new tricks, he or she will be motivated to read juggling books, view videos on-line, or search for websites to challenge themselves with new skills.

For more information on National Gaming Day visit the ALA website and for games/puzzles about libraries visit the ALSC website. To learn more about the Skill Toy Program visit the Flow Circus website.
